Ecuador beginnings
Well what a culture shock. Buenas Aires is like the Paris of South America and
only 6 hours later we arrive to the amazing ancient town of Quito.
The first afternoon was hard as we felt quite whacked from the altitude
sickness.
It makes you feel disoriented and of course vulnerable. It also made us grumpy
so we slept it off. Its dangerous to go out at night by foot so we staye din at
the charming and very old hotel San francisco last night. We are staying right
in the heart of the Old Town where the locals live and the people are
facinating.
the old Indian blooded folk are so tiny - imagine Jan feeling like a giant?
There is a lot of poverty with beggars but an amazing industry of street shoe
cleaners -from established older men with their wooden shoe stands to tiny 7
years boys with snotty noses who cry when you dont want a shoe clean.
Pulls at your heart strings.
Its hot here cos we are on the equator -only 22kms away- but cos we are in the
mountains it can be a cardy for the nights.
We are in the New Town at the moment so we could find the internet and the
money change. Can you believe they use American dollars here - yet everything
is what I call Bali unreal- that is a ham and cheese sandwich is - if you dont
kinw ask a friend who has been to Bali.
Actually John and I are off cheese and ham as thats what we have had every
flight so far.
Food in Ecuador is not going to be the highlight but we go back to brazil where
it sure was, so that is something to savour.
By the way-for all the purists reading this- note that I aPologise for any
punctuation and spelling mistakes once and for all - cos the keyboards and
mouses all vary and cos one pays for a imited time- what you see is what you
will get.
Love to all
Jan
